All Mountain Performance doesn’t mean all-mountain compromise; It means go anywhere and ski anything. The TT in the names of the Head Icon series stands for Torque Turning Technology, and makes fast, agile and easy to handle skis with Iconic performance.
The Icon TT500 skis are pumped full of Heads innovative technology to provide the end user with a fast, dynamic and responsive piste ski. But compared with the TT800 this ski comes with a Power Carbon Jacket which makes it slightly softer and more forgiving. Along the same lines as last year’s Icon TT60’s this is aimed at the intermediate skiers, or those who are not looking for speed as the distinguishing feature, but want a ski that will carve the blues as well as the blacks.

Intelligence technology: Having a ski that can adapt to differing conditions, but also adapts to your own skiing style is something that everyone would benefit from but previously, unless you could afford custom skis, was rarely available. Over the last few years Head have been working on and improving their Intelligence technology which does just that. On hard-packed slopes you want perfect edge grip. On soft snow, you want more manoeuvrability. Breaking the slope record you want your ski to perform differently than when you’re just cruising with your friends or family. Heads Intelligence Technology uses fibres positioned in front of the binding to transform mechanical impulses into electrical energy. The harder you ride, the more energy is produced. This electrical energy is led back to the Intellifibers. This causes them to stiffen up, putting more rebound and torsional stiffness into the ski, this progressively stabilizes the entire ski at high speeds.
Torque Turning Technology: This is a Technology that Head have had for a number of seasons and one that they use almost exclusively in their aggressive piste skis. It allows the ski to combine a silky-smooth flex with superior torsional stiffness and edge-hold. They do this by using skeletal stabilizers (a particularly stiff and taut metal alloy) integrated within the core of the ski that vastly increase the torsional stiffness of the ski while not interfering with its longitudinal flex. This results in skis that are easier to ski (Less energy is required) whilst still allowing superb edge hold on even the iciest of runs.
TAILWINGS: This is evident on all the Icon TT range and works in partnership with Heads Torque Turning Technology. The tail of the ski behind the effective edge, is recessed, allowing for a perfectly smooth and controlled exit out of every turn.
Our Opinion
Thanks to its Intelligence Technology and Torque Turning Technology this ski can be aggressive and stiff if pushed hard, but will also allow the user to ski slowly on the blues and reds without a care in the world. It is easy to get this ski carving, and is great for the skier who is looking to progress their skiing style and wants a ski that will be soft enough for the occasional mistake, but stiff enough to get down the blacks at speed if wanted.
Is this for me?
Great for any skier who is looking for a pair of piste skis that will allow them to push their limits and progress more rapidly. If you are looking for a softer flex piste ski, or for a ski to progress with those carving turns, capable of heading down the blacks just as much as it is at home on the blues and greens then this ski is for you.

Buying Skis
Step 1 - Which Type Of Ski?
The first step in buying your own skis, is to work out the type of skier you are and the skier you want to be.
Skis come in a variety of types. Here are the key ones:
Piste Skis - These are suited to skiing on piste, in good snow conditions. Some models use technology direct from the racing scene. Piste skis are great carving skis. Piste skis may struggle a little when skiing in less perfect conditions, and also if you wish to go off-piste.
All Mountain Skis (Or All Condition Skis) - These skis allow you to ski in a variety of snow conditions. So whether it is icy or slushy, an all-conditions ski will perform better than a piste ski. There is sometimes a loss of carving ability, but the modern all-conditions skis such as Volkl AC skis and Attiva women's skis have the latest technology to maintain carving ability.
Back Country Skis - These skis are for venturing out of bounds, hiking all over the mountain. They will remain versatile enough to ski the whole mountain, and also be lighter than normal to make it easier to carry them or travel uphill with them. Normally these are supplied without bindings, and you select an appropriate binding to suit your needs (See our Ski 101 section)
Off-Piste Skis (Or free ride, powder skis) - These skis are designed for skiing in powder and off-piste conditions. They will generally be wider to help with floating in the snow, and be a little more forgiving to give you more feel in powder and to absorb impacts from jumping/landing.
Which Length Of Ski Do I need?
You know the type of ski you want, you now know what each brand. Now you just need to work out the correct length.
This chart is to give you a rough indication of size. Height is not the main factor with modern carving skis; weight and ability are the two key things to consider. You can contact us any time for advice on ski lengths.
If you are between sizes, a shorter ski will give you shorter turns and a longer ski will be a little faster. If you are comparing to old non-carving skis you will see modern skis tend to be used in shorter lengths.
If you are buying a piste ski this chart should be accurate, if you are looking at an all-conditions ski, and again are between sizes, we suggest the lower of the two lengths. If you are a female skier, also choose the shorter length
