Additional Information about Volkl The Grizzly Skis 2012 With Bindings

The Grizzly is the gold standard for skiers only wanting the best and most sophisticated skis but do not want to be restricted to one style.

Völkl began ski production in the Bavarian town of Straubing, Germany in 1923, making 2010 its 87th anniversary. The company's rich heritage is dotted with a tradition of exciting innovations in ski technology, like the recently-introduced Extended Low  Profile (ELP) rocker design, the first to combine added finesse and manoeuvrability in  deep snow with all-mountain versatility.

When it comes to looks, the die-cut topsheet with its mix of matte and glossy enhancements is almost too handsome for the slopes. But this is not just some pretty boy. This ski delivers outstanding performance for skiers unwilling to limit themselves to just one type of terrain. For athletes who skip from prepared trails to the off-piste steep-and-deep action, the Grizzly will prove a worthy partner.

The XTD Sensor Woodcore and titanium technology give the Grizzly an extra lively feel that delivers 100% performance in all situations. To ensure that 100% of the skier's energy arrives at the ski, it comes outfitted with an iPT Wideride binding, and its Power Switch technology is also on board to make sure it can truly adapt to whatever challenges are ahead with the flip of a switch.

SPECIFICATION

Geometry:  131-89-114
Radius:  18.7m at 177cm
Construction: Double Grip XTD, Powered by Titanium, Power Switch
Core:  XTD Sensor Woodcore PS
Bindings:  iPT Wideride.

Features:
Double Grip XTD:  In order to optimise power over the edges, VÖLKL has developed the Double Grip principle: double height, double edge grip! The doubling of the Wood Core construction with a second wood core built up over the edges allows greater power transfer and stability and increases leverage. With Double Grip XTD, the additional wood core extends along the entire length of the ski. This makes the continuous flex of the ski rounder and more harmonious. The result is precise edge grip and reliable hold so you can carve your track through the snow at high speeds.

Powered by Titanium:  Above and below the XTD Sensor Wood Core there is a layer of titanium reinforcing the ski and adding power and stability. The thin yet extremely strong aluminium alloy extends its unparalleled dampening properties particularly at high speeds.
Power Switch:   Skiing is all about reacting quickly to new situations. Power Switch is the engineering answer to that challenge. One easy adjustment is all that's needed to change the skiing feel of the skis for the current conditions or the skier's mood. Cruise, dynamic, and power only a switch away!
The dial is used to either compress or relax two carbon fibre rods in the ski's core. This changes the ski's stiffness and flex responsiveness. The mechanism is completely integrated into the ski's construction, functions in all conditions and holds up flawlessly even under frequent use.
The 3 settings that are available are:

Cruise:  When this is set the compression is released from the carbon fibre rods. The soft flexing response is ideal for a relaxed ride and allows for easy handling on soft terrain.
Dynamic:  When this is set the system is 50% activated. The ski features a refined mix of elasticity and energy. Perfect for a dynamic, variable ski style and changing slope conditions.
Power:  This is the stiffest setup and enables a more powerful and aggressive skiing style. The total stability helps skiers master even hard and icy terrain and is primarily for high speeds.

Full Camber: The target group for this profile is the athletic, classic on-piste skiers and this design means that the edge length does not vary.  This constant edge length provides maximum control, precision and ride quietness in both gliding and slight edging situations.

XTD Sensor Woodcore:  The XTD Sensor Wood Core is the construction method with the greatest proportion of wood. The core consists of a number of layers of wood glued together using a special patented process to allow the wood and resin to be better bonded. Two additional wood cores stretch along the ski edges for its entire length. The XTD Sensor Wood Core offers an incomparably precise ride and harmonious flex.

OUR OPINION

The Volkl Grizzly remains unchanged for this season, and this is for a good reason.  The Grizzly is the undisputed bear on the mountain, powerful and aggressive in all conditions this ski is impressive no matter where you take it.  Its stand out looks, high-end technology and impressive geometry means this is the ski for the goliaths amount us mere motel skiers.  Heavy and big, these skis demand respect, but, once tamed, offer so much back that they really are worth every penny.

Ski Buying Guide

There is a lot of information on the web, in magazines, and from friends on how to choose the right skis, and of course the correct length.

We were there once, buying our first pair. It's a big investment, but the payback if you choose the right skis is amazing; retail skis are superior to rental skis, only you have used them so they will last a lot longer, and you can also gain valuable ski time on the mountain not having to get into the ski and boot rental queue.

We have broken our guide into two sections - Skis 101, a breakdown of what a ski actually is, all the geeky words used, and what they really mean to you. And then we have the Ski Buyers Guide below, to help guide you through your ski purchase.

We hope you find both of these guides useful, and remember, we are only a phone-call, email or short trip away if you need further advice on your purchase. If you are buying skis, we are here to help!

Buying Skis

Step 1 - Which Type Of Ski?

The first step in buying your own skis, is to work out the type of skier you are and the skier you want to be.

Skis come in a variety of types. Here are the key ones:

Piste Skis - These are suited to skiing on piste, in good snow conditions. Some models use technology direct from the racing scene. Piste skis are great carving skis. Piste skis may struggle a little when skiing in less perfect conditions, and also if you wish to go off-piste.

All Mountain Skis (Or All Condition Skis) - These skis allow you to ski in a variety of snow conditions. So whether it is icy or slushy, an all-conditions ski will perform better than a piste ski. There is sometimes a loss of carving ability, but the modern all-conditions skis such as Volkl AC skis and Attiva women's skis have the latest technology to maintain carving ability.

Back Country Skis - These skis are for venturing out of bounds, hiking all over the mountain. They will remain versatile enough to ski the whole mountain, and also be lighter than normal to make it easier to carry them or travel uphill with them. Normally these are supplied without bindings, and you select an appropriate binding to suit your needs (See our Ski 101 section)

Off-Piste Skis (Or free ride, powder skis) - These skis are designed for skiing in powder and off-piste conditions. They will generally be wider to help with floating in the snow, and be a little more forgiving to give you more feel in powder and to absorb impacts from jumping/landing.

Which Length Of Ski Do I need?

You know the type of ski you want, you now know what each brand. Now you just need to work out the correct length.

This chart is to give you a rough indication of size. Height is not the main factor with modern carving skis; weight and ability are the two key things to consider. You can contact us any time for advice on ski lengths.

If you are between sizes, a shorter ski will give you shorter turns and a longer ski will be a little faster. If you are comparing to old non-carving skis you will see modern skis tend to be used in shorter lengths.

If you are buying a piste ski this chart should be accurate, if you are looking at an all-conditions ski, and again are between sizes, we suggest the lower of the two lengths. If you are a female skier, also choose the shorter length

Next, adjust the length to match your ability:

Decide on your ski level using the above chart, and then make the following adjustments:

REMEMBER! This chart is just a starting guide. If you have rented a ski length recently and found that this suited you, do NOT be afraid to select that size if it differs from the above - Length is a personal thing!

This should be enough to help direct you to the ski for you, but if you need more help just contact us here at Edge & Wax.
