Additional Information about Volkl Sol Womens Skis 2012 With Bindings

A slightly more relaxed skiing style should lead you to the Volkl Sol.  A popular ski for good skiers who enjoy a more relaxed style.

This season Volkl have created some new skis and come up with some entirely new concepts.  Those that they have kept on, they have revamped with new ideas and technology.

Volkls Attiva Range are their women’s models, we have a full range of skis from the Tierra down to the Aire.  This season it is easy to be dazzled by the ATTIVA series.  With a high-tech interior ready to master the toughest challenges and Volkls unique Bio-logic technology to reduce knee strain, improve stance and joint stability and also reduce fatigue, these skis will keep you going all day, chomping at the bit for another run.

With this ski comfort and sportiness cross paths This is the result of the all-condition construction. Bio-Logic features, a lightweight full sensor woodcore and powered by steel inside a classic cambered structure keeps the Sol easy to handle and controlled in all conditions.   A tailored 3Motion binding is included to promote top power transfer.

SPECIFICATION

Bindings:  3Motion (Included)

SKI FEATURES

Full Camber
The target group for this profile is the athletic, classic on-piste skiers and this design means that the edge length does not vary.  This constant edge length provides maximum control, precision and ride quietness in both gliding and slight edging situations.

FULL SENSOR WOOD CORE:   In the Full Sensor Wood Core construction a compact wooden core is integrated from the ski tip to the ski tail providing power and energy along the entire ski's length. The result is optimum support and responsiveness for skiers with a good feeling for the snow and slopes and seek intuitive feedback from their skis.

Powered by Steel:  The top-of-the-line models in the VÖLKL Attiva range boast a special wood core tuning system - all powered by steel.  Above and below the XTD Wood Core, there is a layer of lightweight steel reinforcing the ski and adding power and stability.

Power grip:  By means of its special 3D design, the Powergrip construction method generates more edge pressure, particularly in the binding area. The rails are interrupted in this area of the ski in order to house the 3Motion binding designed especially for Powergrip construction. The fact that the structure is divided into a front and rear area results in relatively low side walls, allowing even more direct contact between the ski boot and the edge. In conjunction with the binding, the ski gains the perfect blend of powerful edge grip, more rounded flex in the binding areas and sporty, but not too aggressive, characteristics. More grip for less effort!

Biologic Technology: It is now widely known that women are much more likely to injure their knees while skiing then men. Not because they ski differently, but because their anatomy reacts more sensitively to strains. Volkl have succeeded in engineering BIO-LOGIC which results in reduced stress levels to knees, with more refined and balanced activation of the leg musculature.
This result is obtained by 3 separate ideas:

1) BIO-LOGIC FLEX
The ski's flex has been adjusted to the special characteristics of BIO-LOGIC GEOMETRY and STANCE. The result is an even more flexible, energy-saving and yet still sportive performance. Turn after turn flows more smoothly and harmoniously.
2) BIO-LOGIC STANCE
The toe area is slightly raised compared to the heel, making turn initiation easier. First and foremost this forces a more dynamic posture with better knee flex angles. The result is a highly efficient, less tiring skiing feel. The muscle supporting the knee are more actively balanced for improved protection.
3) BIO-LOGIC GEOMETRY
Degressive sidecut: the radius is smaller in front of the binding than behind it. Just like a power steering system, this makes quick turns possible and reduces the extreme stresses at the end of a turn. Turning becomes more harmonious and precise.

OUR OPINION

This ski is ideal for those who are good confident skiers, who will not be heading down the blacks at Lyndsy Vonn speeds, but prefer a more relaxed skiing style.  This ski is very easy to handle and is easily controlled, however this does not mean that it is soft.  Its full sensor Woodcore pushes power from the bindings all the way down the ski, and the full camber means that this power is well distributed, leading to a very confidence inspiring edge hold when in the turns.  We really enjoyed this ski, allowing you to be quick in the morning, and as you tire and slow the ski will slow down with you.

IS THIS FOR ME?

For intermediate skiers, or for those who enjoy a relaxed skiing style and want to lay down some controlled turns down the hardpack then this ski is a definite contender.  Very popular last year, and again this year, this is a ski not to be overlooked.

Here is a handy reference chart to give you an indication of your correct ski size. Remember that this chart is just a starting guide. If you have rented a ski length recently and found that this suited you, do NOT be afraid to select that size if it differs from the above - Length is a personal thing!

This should be enough to help direct you to the ski for you, but if you need more help just contact us here at Edge & Wax.

Ski Buying Guide

There is a lot of information on the web, in magazines, and from friends on how to choose the right skis, and of course the correct length.

We were there once, buying our first pair. It's a big investment, but the payback if you choose the right skis is amazing; retail skis are superior to rental skis, only you have used them so they will last a lot longer, and you can also gain valuable ski time on the mountain not having to get into the ski and boot rental queue.

We have broken our guide into two sections - Skis 101, a breakdown of what a ski actually is, all the geeky words used, and what they really mean to you. And then we have the Ski Buyers Guide below, to help guide you through your ski purchase.

We hope you find both of these guides useful, and remember, we are only a phone-call, email or short trip away if you need further advice on your purchase. If you are buying skis, we are here to help!

Buying Skis

Step 1 - Which Type Of Ski?

The first step in buying your own skis, is to work out the type of skier you are and the skier you want to be.

Skis come in a variety of types. Here are the key ones:

Piste Skis - These are suited to skiing on piste, in good snow conditions. Some models use technology direct from the racing scene. Piste skis are great carving skis. Piste skis may struggle a little when skiing in less perfect conditions, and also if you wish to go off-piste.

All Mountain Skis (Or All Condition Skis) - These skis allow you to ski in a variety of snow conditions. So whether it is icy or slushy, an all-conditions ski will perform better than a piste ski. There is sometimes a loss of carving ability, but the modern all-conditions skis such as Volkl AC skis and Attiva women's skis have the latest technology to maintain carving ability.

Back Country Skis - These skis are for venturing out of bounds, hiking all over the mountain. They will remain versatile enough to ski the whole mountain, and also be lighter than normal to make it easier to carry them or travel uphill with them. Normally these are supplied without bindings, and you select an appropriate binding to suit your needs (See our Ski 101 section)

Off-Piste Skis (Or free ride, powder skis) - These skis are designed for skiing in powder and off-piste conditions. They will generally be wider to help with floating in the snow, and be a little more forgiving to give you more feel in powder and to absorb impacts from jumping/landing.

Which Length Of Ski Do I need?

You know the type of ski you want, you now know what each brand. Now you just need to work out the correct length.

This chart is to give you a rough indication of size. Height is not the main factor with modern carving skis; weight and ability are the two key things to consider. You can contact us any time for advice on ski lengths.

If you are between sizes, a shorter ski will give you shorter turns and a longer ski will be a little faster. If you are comparing to old non-carving skis you will see modern skis tend to be used in shorter lengths.

If you are buying a piste ski this chart should be accurate, if you are looking at an all-conditions ski, and again are between sizes, we suggest the lower of the two lengths. If you are a female skier, also choose the shorter length

Next, adjust the length to match your ability:

Decide on your ski level using the above chart, and then make the following adjustments:

REMEMBER! This chart is just a starting guide. If you have rented a ski length recently and found that this suited you, do NOT be afraid to select that size if it differs from the above - Length is a personal thing!

This should be enough to help direct you to the ski for you, but if you need more help just contact us here at Edge & Wax.
