Edge & Wax are one of the largest retailers of Holmenkol waxes and tools in the UK. We were introduced to these products several years ago in Canada, before they were even being distributed in the UK, and used them in our ski and snowboard workshop straight away.
We are a proud retailer of a comprehensive range of Holmenkol snowboard and ski products, and they can be seen in use in our workshops. Holmenkol - License To Win!
1922: Chemist and ski jumper Dr. Max Fischer started his own company in Ditzingen near Stuttgart, Germany. Innovative spirit is deeply rooted in this region and inventors, engineers and innovators have felt at home here ever since those days. Firms like Bosch, Trumpf, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche and Kärcher are amongst those which can be found here.
"Vereinigte Wachswarenfabriken AG" was the first company to develop and produce ski wax on an indus-trial scale. Ski wax was primarily needed to provide the wooden base of skis with a protective coating, to make them last longer and impregnate the wood. For optimum ski waxing, a so-called ski base was applied which usually lasted one season.
In addition to Holmenkol ski wax, the company produced shoe wax, candle wax and floor wax under the brand name Loba. In 1922 20 candle machines produced 85 tons of wax.

A dedicated ski iron or snowboard iron like the range we provide from Holmenkol is essential to ensure correct application of wax, and to avoid damage to your skis or snowboard.
The reason a dedicated waxing iron like the Holmenkol range we carry is better, is the thermostat and heating plate. These are optimised to stay within just a few degrees at all times. They are temperamental things; You will hear the iron clicking on and off as you wave it around, as it fights to keep a constant temperature for you.
The average wax goes onto a ski at around 125°C, and the harder ones for cold conditions around 135°C. Skis and snowboards are generally made of layers of material, whether its wood, carbon fibre, titanium of foam, but a constant is that there is a glue resin (epoxy) that bonds everything together. Go much beyond 140°C and you are going to risk the epoxy softening up which then leads to possible delamination - separating of the layers. This wrecks your equipment either instantly, or over time as it allows water into the layers which wreaks havoc.
So a dedicated iron is a good investment and will also last you a long time. Ski wax irons have a thermostat that can be adjusted to match the correct temperature for the wax you are applying, and in the case of Holmenkol wax this is printed on the packaging.
