Icebreaker Merino Wool

Icebreaker produce a stunning range of base layers and accessories for the outdoor enthusiast. Why Merino?

The merino is one of the world’s most ancient breeds of sheep. And one of the toughest. Very different to a regular sheep who chews grass in the lowlands, merino live in the extremes of New Zealand’s Southern Alps. Regular sheep would freeze to death up there. But the merino’s fleece is built for extremes – breathable in summer, insulating in winter, yet exceptionally soft and lightweight.

Icebreaker have pioneered the use of merino wool in the wilderness since 1994, and now we’ve fused nature and technology to create merino layers for the outdoors, for performance sports, and for the city.

ICEBREAKER BODYFIT 150
This is Icebreaker’s lightest weight material. This is ideal as a light base layer for spring skiing, and for summer use under a cycling jersey to wick away sweat from the body to keep you dry. Bodyfit 150 is ideal for less cold conditions and even warm conditions where we do not want sweat lingering and causing a chill.

ICEBREAKER BODYFIT 200
This is in our opinion the best all-rounder if you are only picking one garment. The Bodyfit 200 weight offers an ideal blend of 4 seasons protection, whilst still wicking sweat away to keep the body dry and protect from chills. This can be worn for a multitude of sports, not just skiing and snowboarding. It is a medium weight product so does not feel bulky, and thanks to Icebreakers garment cuts, feels great against the skin with none of the itchy feeling of traditional wool. In very cold conditions you can combine this with a Bodyfit 260 layer to give the ultimate protection.

ICEBREAKER BODYFIT 260
This is the warmest weight that we sell here at Edge & Wax. This is our staff choice for skiing in places like Canada where it can get quite chilly. The brilliant thing about Icebreaker Bodyfit 260 is that it is a slightly heavier weight, but still doesn’t feel bulky, and is versatile enough to wear as a base layer, a mid layer or in some garments even an outer layer for back country skiing or spring skiing. All the usual benefits remain – low odour, high wicking, durability, warmth etc., but this weight of garment has to go into any regular wintersports enthusiasts kit bags in our opinion.

ICEBREAKER REAL FLEECE
New for 2011/12, when these arrived at Edge & Wax we all wanted a Real Fleece garment! It is an alternative to synthetic fleece, offering superior warmth, high wicking properties, durability and low odour in a weight that can easily be worn as an outer layer, a mid layer in very cold conditions, or even as an après ski garment. Being made from natural merino wool it performs in all conditions and offers a new and refreshing alternative to synthetic fleece products.
